Its been a long time coming

Everything happens for a reason.

Pretty strong, meaningful sentence, but its ever-growing presence in my life makes me fucking smile alot. Like the gangster pictured above. Its been a long time since I've felt this happy, and its about time things looked up, haha. I should start to use this thing more often...

Lately, aka the last month, I've been rocking alot of the Benzi mixes found here so it was great to hear he would be in town at this months Grind, only ten bucks, at Babylon alongside DJ Frame.

New tattoo this Thursday, pics following soon after. If your thinking about getting tattooed and your wondering where to go, check my man Travis at Planet Ink Extreme.

Im knee deep in Season 2, shits getting crazy. Ill be updating this more often, hopefully much more picture heavy then previous....

Munny's and Minus the Bear.

So tomorrow night is the munny show at Lost Marbles. It runs from 8:30-11:30 and is worth checking out. On Saturday, at Norml, a mini version of this art show will go up along side Pranks art show, and will be up for a few weeks. It should be great, and also is worth checking out.

Whatever happened to the fall being THE season for live music? Dont get me wrong, we have some great shows coming up, but normally its a matter of deciding what great live show to go check out. Now, not so much.

Minus the bear have been what Ive been craving lately. Highly Refined Pirates brightened my opinion of what was going on in the indie scene when it was released, and its an album with alot of mixed memories. For some reason, maybe because i heard it the most driving around with the windows down on a road trip, but summer comes to mind for sure. I had to go buy another copy today of this at end hits because i couldnt find mine, and when i listened to it today, for some reason it reminded me alot of break ups. Break ups are shitty but i guess a fact of life too. Nevertheless, this album, as well as Minos El Oso are two of my favorites, and if you missed out on this band, dont sleep. Both albums also feature Matt Bayles, who has gone on to produce alot of great music.

Busta Rhymes, Foreplay and Wu Tang Clan.

I had an interesting talk with a friend late last night, and I think he made me realize that there is nothing really holding me in Ottawa anymore, but yet i can't decide if I would or maybe the question is could get up and move to wherever. His idea involves the west coast, and alot of snowboarding, which definitely piques my interest, but at the same time, I find myself very comfortable in Ottawa. Maybe thats the problem. Anyhow, the weather IS getting colder, which brings us closer to the possibility of snow, which, after such a mediocre summer, better not disappoint. Fall is always a season I looked forward to, but I think that it might be directly related to being a guy, and enjoying the return to school to find out what kind of beautiful ladies would be in your classes. That, and it makes females hormones go crazy. Not guys though...

The other night as I lay in bed thinking about nonsense, for some reason the first time I encountered the term "foreplay" popped into my mind. My dad, shortly after I began grade 7, went through a seperation with my mom, and he dealt with it by taking a job in Toronto. So ofcourse, he packed up his things, and moved to Ajax, Ontario. This meant that he would drive down to visit us, or take us back to Ajax so that he could still spend time with him. I really didnt enjoy these trips, and I'd often secretly get high, or go on really long walks along Lake Ontario to pass the time, and tried my hardest to avoid the family time he was trying so hard to have. One day I borrow the old mans rollerblades, and take to the trails surrounding the area. Shortly after I start my journey, a girl my age stops me and asks me for a cigarette, so i give her one. Then she asks me my name, and if i want to be her boyfriend. Remember, this is the summer of Grade 7 to 8 for me, so I obviously didnt hesitate. We hung out the rest of the day, smoked cigarettes, and bummed around a local Mac's milk parking lot, kissing and being teenagers. She called home from a payphone and had to go home for dinner. My dad didnt know where i was, so we parted ways and she told me she would call me. And she did. She wanted to meet up at night, and go for a walk. I went home, ate spaghetti with my brothers, sister and dad, and made up a lie about how i made some friends and they had a games night i was invited to. I remember these details to this day which is super wierd to me, haha. Anyways, the suns kinda starting to go down, and we are walking around these paths along Lake Ontario, and we climb down this mini cliff and lie on these rocks, which for the record was really awkward. We start kissing, and making out, and she stops and asks me if I knew what foreplay was. In my mind, clearly i should know what it is, but at this point shes not referring to it in terms im used to, and so i try and pull it off like i know anyways, and say "yeah, ofcourse!". I remember that super awkward pause where she looked at me, saw through my lie, and said "nevermind". I was defeated. I would find out hours later what i had just missed out on, and realizing the embarrassment of not knowing what she was talking about.

Around the same time, I was buying random cds i saw reviewed in The Source, which I regularly picked up from the Ainees convenience store around the corner from my moms place in Kanata. I grabbed The Coming, by Busta Rhymes because they said he was one of the next up and coming hip hop mcs, and that his energetic, raspy smooth style set him apart from others. The first time i heard Woo Ha it sent shivers up my spine.
Months later at an infamous Kanata Wave Pool dance I impressed a girl by knowing the lyrics to it, and she made out with me. She also made a point of telling me i was the worst dancer that she had ever danced with. She ended up being really wierd, we dated for a two weeks and she carved my initials into her ankle. She ended up marrying her high school boyfriend of forever, some fat dork that tried really hard to be a ladies man(RC, colin. think about it)

Wu Tang were a group i heard about in Grade 8 but never listened to for a long time after that. Kids would get in trouble for tagging the WU symbol all over Earl of March, and their agendas, and their hands even, it was maybe too cult like for me in the beginning. so many followers. I remember going over to this dude Jay's house after school one day that year and he had it, and I asked to borrow it with the intentions of never giving it back. I was a dick like that, and yes, i kept his Wu Tang -Enter the 36 chambers cd.
So yeah, i take this kids cd, listen to it, note that there is alot of asian kung fu samples, but those beats were so unique, and the lyrics so hard. I killed that album that year, and it got me into the members that are Wu Tang solo albums and side projects. There is no denying that there will probably never be a group of 9 people (8, RIP ol dirty) that can make such amazing songs, and still hold it down on all their own solo projects. I should dedicate a post to my top 5 favorite Wu Tang albums, which if you think about it(well, you gotta be a fan i suppose) is not the easiest feat.

I think for now ill hit the updates with the essential hip hop albums i had growing up, but eventually get to the gems of alternative, and after my first round of hip hop, the punk and hardcore albums I loved so much as well.

Ed Templeton and Onyx

ED TEMPLETON.
Artist, photographer, but better known for the creation of Toy Machine and his professional skateboarding career. When i was first introduced to Ed Templeton it was in an issue of Transworld Skateboarding, he was cut into frames with some little robots and demons drawn around it, with little subliminal messages placed throughout. It really was all it took to hook me on this guys art, and made me curious enough to check out Welcome to Hell, the latest offering at the time from his skateboard company. His part in the video blew me away, but who was this wierd man who was known for wearing tight pants(a pioneer of todays trend?), as well as making pictures of his naked wife public. Im not sure what the mans main focus is today, but his pictures are always interesting to check out, his art still inspires me, and im glad the kids are still buying Toy Machine product.

ONYX- ALL WE GOT IZ US.
There was a girl named Dawn in high school who lent me this cd because it was "too hard" for her, and she wanted to borrow my copy of Snoop Doggs "Tha Doggfather". I listening to it and thinking it was the best hip hop I'd ever heard. Its dark, desperate, catchy, and original. I used to fall asleep in my room to this cd, my mom would come downstairs to my bedroom, turn it down and yell at me for the amount of swearing they did. To her it wasnt music, but to me it was life changing, and I cant say that I ever would have indulged in as much hip hop as I did if it wasnt for this album. I ended up keeping the album on the girl, let her keep the mediocre Doggfather album instead, and played the cd far too many times as a teenager. Years went by, and i dated a girl who i broke up with shortly after a month of dating, and i forgot this precious gem at her place. To get back at me, she scratched the cd up real bad, and sent it back to me via a friend. I hated that girl right through high school because of Onyx.

This has been a long time in the making, or really I've been quite lazy. Expect lots of randomness.
